Environmental Science

Welcome to Environmental Science!

The field of environmental science has enjoyed rapid growth since the mid-1980's.  Occupational employment projections compiled by the Connecticut State Department of Labor show that job opportunities are expected to be very good for environmental scientists.  An increase in local, state, and federal laws concerning environmental issues has provided increased opportunity for professionals in this field.  Here at QVCC we offer a number of environmental science courses along with an Environmental Science track degree program in Tech Studies.

Environmental Science Option - Technology Studies Degree

The Environmental Science option to the Technology Studies degree prepares individuals for careers in Connecticut’s growing environmental science industry.

The program will provide students with basic skills and understanding of environmental science issues by exploring:

  • Scientific method.
  • Laboratory techniques applicable to the EVS discipline.
  • Field skills in environmental science/ecology.
  • Sustainable energy and green technology.
  • Environmental chemistry.
  • GIS mapping technologies.

In addition to general education courses, the program’s curriculum focuses on science and math and includes an environmental science field laboratory where students will learn environmental analysis techniques in field study areas as well as on samples of drinking water, soil, etc.  The valuable skills learned will give students an opportunity for employment in this emerging field.

The Environmental Science associate degree program, with its strong foundation in sciences and mathematics, will also allow students to seamlessly transfer to Eastern Connecticut State University and pursue a bachelor’s degree in environmental earth science with specializations in:

  • Environmental earth science
  • General earth science
  • Energy science

In addition, this degree program is a part of Connecticut’s College of Technology (COT), an innovative pathway program that allows a student to complete an associate’s degree in technology studies with the ultimate goal of earning a four-year baccalaureate degree from a sponsoring state university – Eastern Connecticut State University, Central Connecticut State University, and the University of Hartford.
